Skunk
Skunk is the top flower of the cannabis plant. It is also known as top shoots, buds, flowers and nugs, and are known for their high content of various cannabinoids. Skunk contains a number of active substances such as CBD, THC, HHC, CBG etc., and can vary in size depending on the age and genetics of the plant. In general, they are less than 1-2 cm in diameter, and typically have a characteristic sharp scent which can be stronger in some varieties than in others.
What is Topskud?
Top buds are the uppermost part of the cannabis plant, the part where the flowers are located. This is also the part of the plant where the most resin glands, also called trichomes, naturally sit. Cannabis flowers can vary greatly in appearance, terpene profile, and cannabinoid content depending on the strain, cultivation, and post-processing, and therefore top buds are typically categorized by which cannabinoid they are primarily rich in, e.g., CBD top buds or THCA top buds. Top buds are also known as skunk, both terms refer to the upper part of the cannabis plant.
Top bud varieties
Cannabis top buds contain a number of active substances other than THC and CBD. This includes a wide range of other cannabinoids such as HHC or CBG. The content of CBD and THC is defined by the cannabis strain, as well as how well the plants have been cultivated. It is especially the individual producers' grow/cultivation techniques and the genetics used that are crucial for the quality of the top buds. Typically, plants are pruned so they don't grow too tall, so they instead use their energy on the top buds.
What is the difference between CBD top buds and THCA top buds?
CBD top buds and THCA top buds both come from the uppermost flowers of the cannabis plant. The difference lies in the way the plants are bred. Through breeding and genetics, plants can end up with different contents. In this way, some plants have a higher content of CBD and others a higher content of THCA, which is the basis for the distinction between top buds.
CBD top buds:
- Primarily contain cannabidiol (CBD), which is a non-euphoric cannabinoid.
- Legal in Denmark as long as the THC content is below 0.2%.
THCA top buds:
- Primarily contain tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), which is a precursor to THC.
- Legal in Denmark as long as the THC content is below 0.2%.
It is an art today to have developed CBD genetics with the same potency, scent, and appearance as the original and well-known cannabis strains, such as White Widow, Lemon Haze. The difficult part arises when the THC level must be kept in check so that it does not exceed the limit of 0.2%. This is the reason why research is being conducted into breeding new types and varieties, which are based on the old genetics. Today, the technique for this breeding process has been successfully found, but there is no longer a clear distinction between the two main varieties Indica and Sativa, as it has been necessary to breed the top buds as hybrids of the two varieties.
Therefore, most CBD cannabis top buds are always hybrids. Some have a predominance of Sativa, while others will have a predominance of Indica, which can be decoded from the appearance of the top buds.
